Grain procurement
One of the most important aspects of the growers' returns, it can be the difference between a handsome profit and an embarrassing loss in today's market. It is well known that many Companies have an area or commodity that they specialise in and are consequently more competent in. It is therefore in our interest to place feed or milling wheat with the best feed or milling wheat traders and malting barley with the best malting barley traders. Rarely will you find them both under the same roof.
Wheats
This market is an out and out commodity and usually lead by the shipper for the East Anglian area. We link into all shippers from the 1,000 tonne coaster through to the 50,000 tonne vessels. One introduction was that of the Tracking Fund.
It has proven the most transparent form of risk management offered to the grower, giving an average price previously unseen by any UK grower, linking in the track of the London LIFFE wheat futures market, with again flexibility to the grower.
We have also developed close links with 1st hand buyers who do not get involved with the merchanting chain, as they prefer to deal direct with the growers.
Barleys
We are very fortunate in offering the services of Gowlett Grain Ltd, a company solely dedicated to the malting trade, handling no other commodity in their portfolio, which is very unusual in today's 'we must trade anything associated to grain procurement' type operation. As you can imagine the attention to detail and execution is very focused, giving both competitive returns to growers and hanging on to the personal attention in the process.
Oil seed rape
Commercial
Again we trade with various Companies who give flexibility on movement, shipping, crushing and payments leading to a very formidable operation. No more so than our recent tie up with a large American operation bringing further opportunities to the European grower. For more information see www.techcrops.com
Industrial
You cannot get any better than trading with us for industrial opportunities. Long before set aside came in, industrial cropping was high on our agenda and has taken Porter Ag into a position of being one of the foremost companies handling specialist crops for today's producer and consumer. It all started with the unification of Germany and other countries like Poland where industrial cropping had taken a large percentage of production. Once the boundaries had fallen then the drive for food production was greater in these countries, leading to a requirement for industrial cropping on a large scale elsewhere.
Because of pilot schemes running from the early eighties and the stable agricultural economy in the UK it was deemed a suitable country to encourage the first truly industrial cropping of oil seed rape. High erucic acid rape (HEAR) has steadily grown in importance and popularity ever since and particularly with the introduction of set aside. It is currently the single most identifiable crop to be grown, outstripping the returns of many other crops.
Pulses
There are occasions when specialist varieties lead to us finding more niche market opportunities. We have identified several companies such as Fuerst Day Lawson and Peters Commodities, of which can offer good premiums under certain conditions.
